Moontoast announced it has raised a $4.5 million extension to its Series B funding it secured early last year. The investment was made by the Martin Companies, which led a $5 million deal last year in the Boston-based company, which provides advertising services on social media.
ZappRx, which provides a platform for electronic prescriptions, announced it has raised $1 million in seed funding in a round led by Atlas Venture. The funding also included SR One, and individual investors Terry Meguid, David Hamamoto, Sean Trigony and James Glimm. The Cambridge, Mass.-based company has now raised $2.2 million in total seed financing, having announced last fall a $1 million seed round.
General Catalyst Partners, which in December raised $675 million for its seventh fund, has added Paul Sagan as a partner and XIR. Sagan was an early employee at Akamai Technologies and served as its CEO from 2005 to 2013. Sagan's previous association with General Catalyst came last fall when the firm led a $25 million growth funding round in Datto, a Norwalk, Conn.-based provider of backup data and recovery services. Sagan became non-executive chairman of Datto as part of the funding.
What impact crowdfunding is having on angels and traditional VCs remains to be seen.
On-demand market research provider GutCheck has raised a $4 million round of financing led by Icon Venture Partners and including existing investors. Details of the financing weren't disclosed, but the funding was an up round. The Denver-based company has now raised $10 million in total funding, including a $4 million Series B round last year from Grotech Ventures, Crawley Ventures, Highway 12 Ventures and Village Ventures. As part of the recent deal, Jeff Hinck, general partner of Icon, has joined the board.
Madison Reed, a San Francisco-based maker of a hair-coloring product, has raised $12 million in a Series B round of funding. Norwest Venture Partners led the financing, with previous investors True Ventures and Maveron joining the round. As part of the round, Norwest Managing Partner Jeff Crowe has joined the board. The company has now raised about $16 million in total capital. Madison Reed was co-founded in April 2013 by Amy Errett, a former GP with Maveron and now a special advisor to True Ventures. She told peHUB that the funding will be used to help the 30-employee company expand and move to larger digs in the city.
Accel Partners has announced the addition of Eric Wolford as venture partner. Wolford, who currently sits on the boards of BitTorrent and Jut, previously was with Riverbed Technology. At Accel, he will focus on enterprise IT and data-driven software. Wolford is the second new addition at Accel in less than two months. In early December, Brian O'Malley came over from Battery Ventures and joined Accel as partner.
Docker, which runs an open source project used by cloud developers and operators to automate the deployment of apps, said it has completed raising a $15 million Series B round of funding. Greylock Partners led the round, which also included Insight Venture Partners, Benchmark Capital, Trinity Ventures and Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang. As part of the funding, Jerry Chen, a partner at Greylock, will join the board.
FarmLogs, which makes an agricultural app that helps farmers manage their farm to increase yield, has raised a $4 million Series A round of financing led by Drive Capital. Existing investors Huron River Ventures, Hyde Park Venture Partners and Hyde Park Angels also participated in the round. The Ann Arbor, Mich.-based company, which went through the Y Combinator program, previously raised $1 million in seed capital. As part of the funding, Mark Kvamme, co-founder of Drive Capital, has joined the board.
New Enterprise Associates has named life sciences veteran Dr. Elliott Sigal as a venture partner and senior advisor to help augment the firm's healthcare practice. Sigal is a former executive vice president and director for Bristol-Myers Squibb, where he served as the company’s Chief Scientific Officer and president of R&D from 2004 to 2013.
