Akouos, a new biotechnology company focused on restoring and preserving hearing, has raised $7.5 million in seed funding. The lead investors were 5AM Ventures and New Enterprise Associates. Partners Innovation Fund also participated in the round. In conjunction with the funding, Kush Parmar, a managing partner at 5AM Ventures and Ed Mathers, a partner at New Enterprise Associates, have joined the Akouos board of directors.
Mojio, a connected car cloud platform company, has secured C$30 million in Series B funding. Kensington Capital led the round with participation from other investors that included Trend Forward Capital, innogy Ventures, the Amazon Alexa Fund, BDC IT Venture Fund, Deutsche Telekom Capital Partners and Relay Ventures. Mojio has offices in Vancouver, Silicon Valley and Bulgaria.
San Francisco-based Replika, a personal chatbox, has raised $6.5 million in funding. The investors included Khosla Ventures and Sherpa Capital.
Halifax, Nova Scotia-based Affinio Inc, an interest analytics platform that uses machine learning, has raised $9 million in Series B funding. The investors were Round13 Capital, Whitecap Venture Partners and Build Ventures.
Lexington, Massachusetts-based Fractyl Laboratories Inc, a medical tech company, has raised $44 million in Series D financing. The investors included GV, True Ventures, the IDO Fund, General Catalyst, Bessemer Venture Partners, Domain Associates, Mithril Capital Management, Emergent Medical Partners, L.P. and Deerfield Management Company L.P.
SmartInvest Ventures has named Martin Hunt as a general partner. Hunt is the former chairman and CEO of an unidentified cable installation assembly company and founder of multiple startups.
Boise, Idaho-based VisitPay, a platform for patient financial health, has secured an undisclosed amount of funding. The investor was Flare Capital Partners.
Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Semma Therapeutics, a biotechnology company focused on developing new regenerative medicines, has secured $114 million in Series B financing. Eight Roads Ventures and Cowen Healthcare Investments led the round with participation from other investors that included MPM Capital, F-Prime Capital Partners, ARCH Venture Partners, Novartis, Medtronic, JDRF T1D Fund, ORI Healthcare Fund, Wu Capital, 6 Dimensions Capital and SinoPharm Capital. In conjunction with this financing, Semma has added Daniel Auerbach from Eight Roads and Kevin Raidy from Cowen to its board of directors.
Boston-based ResTORbio Inc, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on treating aging-related diseases, has closed $40 million in Series B financing. OrbiMed led the round with participation from other investors that included Fidelity Management & Research Company, Rock Springs Capital, Quan Capital and Nest Bio.
Vista, California-based TetraVue, a provider of advanced 3D technology, has secured an undisclosed amount of funding. TetraVue's backers include KLA Tencor, Lam Research, Tsing Capital, Robert Bosch Venture Capital GmbH, Samsung Catalyst Fund and Nautilus Ventures.
