Smarterer has raised $1.6 million in funding. Investors in this round include Rethink Education and Deborah Quazzo, founder and managing partner of GSV Advisors. Also, the company has appointed Dave Balter as CEO. Balter is replacing Jennifer Fremont-Smith. Based in Boston, Smarterer, which is also backed by Google Ventures and True Ventures, is a provider of skills assessment solutions.
San Francisco-based ARTIS Ventures has named Gus Hunt, former CTO for the CIA, as an advisor. In his new position, Hunt will identify and analyze new investment opportunities as well as work with the firm's portfolio companies.

NxThera has closed its Series C financing round at an amount the company said surpassed its $20 million target. Investors in this round were not disclosed. Based in Maple Grove, Minnesota, NxThera is a medical device company that focuses on endourology conditions. The firm's previous backers include Arborteum Ventures and Aberdare Ventures.
LA-based medical device firm Bruin Biometrics has raised $10 million in funding. The investors in this round were not named. According to the company, the financing will be used for marketing, clinical trials and research and development.
Carnegie Mellon University has received $10 million from James R. and Susan S. Swartz. A graduate of CMU's business school, James Swartz is a founding partner of Accel Partners.
Compliance Science said Thursday that it has tapped Scott Bieker as chief of product strategy. Previously, Bieker worked at Advent Software where he served as director of product development and management. Based in New York City, Compliance Science, which is backed by Edison Ventures, is a provider of governance, risk management and compliance solutions for the financial services sector.
Little Borrowed Dress has closed $1.25 million in seed funding. The investors included Index Ventures, a16z, Launch Capital, Neu Venture Capital and NYC Seed. According to the company, the capital infusion will be used for growth. Headquartered in New York City, Little Borrowed Dress is an online bridesmaid dress rental company.
Nok Nok Labs said Thursday that it has secured $16.5 million in Series B funding. The investors were Lenovo and previous backers DCM and ONSET Ventures. In conjunction with the funding, Lenovo's George He will join Nok Nok's board of directors. Based in Palo Alto, Calif., Nok Nok Labs is a provider of online authentication solutions.
