GroupSpaces has secured $1.3 million investment round from Index Ventures and an angel investor consortium including Dave McClure, Chris Sacca, Simon Levene, Meagan Marks, Ariel Poler and Quincy Smith of CODE Advisors. Index Ventures partner, Mike Volpi, will take a board seat. GroupSpaces, of London, provides tools for groups and communities to manage and promote themselves online.
Walt Disney Co said on Thursday it has acquired startup iPhone app developer Tapulous, as the company continues its push into mobile games. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Eucalyptus Systems Inc. has completed a $20 million round of funding led by New Enterprise Associates, a new investor. Benchmark Capital and BV Capital, current investors, also participated. Eucalyptus, of Santa Barbara, Calif., creates open source cloud software and has raised $25.5 million to date with two rounds of funding.
Google Inc. has agreed to buy ITA Software Inc., a flight information software company, for $700 million cash. ITA's investors include Battery Ventures, General Catalyst Partners, PAR Investment Partners, Sequoia Capital and Spectrum Equity Investors.
Kendall Cooper, the former CFO of The Mayfield Fund, has joined Allegis Capital as CFO. Palo Alto, Calif.-based Allegis is an early stage venture capital firm with more than $500 million under management. The Mayfield Fund, of Menlo Park, Calif., is also a venture capital firm with more than $2.8 billion under management.
Second quarter has emerged as the best time period for venture-backed IPOs since late 2007. There were 17 venture-backed IPOs in second quarter, raising $1.3 billion. Local.com Corp. (NASDAQ:LOCM) said Thursday that it has agreed to buy the assets of OCTANE360, a provider of domain-based local advertising services to small businesses. Local.com is paying $5 million in cash and stock with an earnout of up to $5.9 million if certain performance criteria are met in the two-year period following the closing. At the same time, Local.com said it had closed a $30 million revolving credit facility with Silicon Valley Bank. Local.com, of Irvine, Calif., operates a local search site and network.
McPhy Energy has received a second round of funding worth EUR 13.7 million. Sofinnova Partners was lead investor with participation from Gimv and Amundi Private Equity Funds. McPhy Energy, of France, is involved in the solid storage of hydrogen in the form of magnesium hydride. Sofinnova Partners is a venture capital firm based in Paris.
Modcloth, an innovative online retailer, has secured $19.8 million in Series B financing led by Accel Partners. Prior investors, First Round Capital and Floodgate, also participated. News of the financing was reported by peHUB in May.
Move Networks said late Wednesday that it has retained a financial advisor to evaluate strategic alternatives, including a possible sale. Roxanne Austin, Move’s president and CEO, is also stepping down.
