Semiconductor investing isn’t as trendy as it was, say, 30 years ago, but U.S. venture money going to chip startups rose 63% from the fourth quarter to the first. The increase followed two quarters of declines and came even as the number of deals slipped slightly. The uptick is due in large part to several […]
As if there isn’t already enough attention being paid to online shopping and daily deals sites, such as Groupon and LivingSocial. Stealth startup Decide.com announced Tuesday it raised another $6 million in a series B round led by Maveron and supported by Madrona Ventures Group and several angel investors. It also added to its string […]
Many of you have by now glanced at the first-quarter venture investment data from the MoneyTree Report. Here is a deeper dive into details you may have unintentionally overlooked. The study, as you know, is generated by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association, and based on data provided by Thomson Reuters, publisher of this […]
Investment dollars inched higher in the first quarter as venture capitalists favored later stage deals and returned with interest to cleantech and life science, according to the MoneyTree Report by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA), based on data from Thomson Reuters. Angels were particularly active last year – perhaps more than previously thought – with a strong rise in dollars placed and an expansion in overall deal size. The rising deal size is among the most interesting observations from a report the University of New Hampshire’s Center for Venture Research released Tuesday. The study found angels […]
Last week, Forbes published its Midas List of venture investors with Jim Breyer of Accel Partners edging out Sequoia’s Michael Moritz and Greylock’s Reid Hoffman for the top spot. This closely followed list of VC moneymen has become something of a Who’s Who of the business. Its focus is the highest-profile GPs with the best […]
Securities & Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Schapiro mailed what is certain to be a widely-debated letter to Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) earlier this week. I don’t know if you’ve read it. The headline news came out Friday in a Wall Street Journal piece noting that Schapiro (pictured) is rethinking the crucial 500-investor threshold rule. This […]
At the risk of sounding like a naysayer, I admit coming away from Thursday’s 500 Startups Demo Day feeling as if a similar scene unfolded a decade ago against the backdrop of a Pets.com sock and a Webvan delivery van. The crowd was eager, the startups engaging and the investors from firms such as Sequoia […]
Back after a two-year hiatus, Forbes’ Midas List of venture investors notes how the investment markets have changed. The secondary trading of private company shares is now a big deal, and micro-cap funds play a bigger role in early-stage financing. Overseas, competition heightened at precisely the moment that financial worries tripped up Western economies. Despite […]
